Dimocarpus longan is a tropical, edible fruit producing tree in the Sapindaceae or soapberry family. Trees like lychee and rambutan are also members of this family. It is native to tropical Asia and China.
The heartwood of longan is red toned to brown, hard, fine grained, and takes a fine polish. It works and looks very similar to lychee wood.
